Welcome to my work area. And welcome to what my artist work area typically looks like. No, I did not set this up. This is what my work area looked like when I completed the drawings for comic #48 on Monday. When I draw the comic, I get out tons of reference material just to make sure that I have all of my lines, corners and inspiration in the right places. Most of the books out was reference for the final panel, the circular room directly under the Room of Iola. Let’s see, here’s what I was using:
1. Two interior design books, one used for the ceiling border, and the other was a reference for a circular room.
2. A book all about cabins, since it had a great pattern for a circular ceiling, an idea I tossed around for awhile.
3. One of my photo albums (that little strip of green in the bottom right corner). I had actually walked in a circular stairway that had the look I was wanting and I had wondered if I had taken a good picture of the stair well. No such luck there, but it was a good idea.
4. A book about designing stairs. That book has been a fabulous resource so far!
5. A ruler and two pencils
6. A bowl and a saucer cup, for helping me start the circular room boundaries on the floor. I traced around the edges of the bowl and cup and then adjusted the lines to suit my room. They made for a great starting position for the floor plan.
7. And last but not least, I have my white binder that houses the hard copies of all of the pages of the comic and my story notes. I am constantly going back to those to make sure that not only are my characters correct in how they are drawn, but also that my continuity is correct.

Some days, I do not have so many reference materials next to me. For instance, when I drew today’s comic, I only had the stair design book, my white notebook, my story notes and The Art of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (had a great spiral staircase picture). Other days, it’s just me and my own notes.

Welcome to my work area.

Happy Monday!

First of all, I would like to thank all of you for reading the comic. I would also like to thank those of you who vote for this comic on Top Web Comics and Buzz Comix. QFB has been right around 260 on TWC and 200 on Buzz. This has gotten the comic out to more people and that is a good thing.

Ok, enough of the self promotion. I going on a limit number of hours of sleep lately, so I have been just a little exhausted. First, we have the normal schedule which means that I do not get to bed until 11:30 to 12:00 at night and up around 6:00, but then you have to factor in the fact that I have ended up going to bed late (for my schedule) which means no sleep for me until about 1 ish. I do not mind my schedule except for the fact that my body wants to sleep in the middle of the afternoon when I am supposed to be working. It is a wonderful mind over matter thing. Most of the time, thankfully, my mind wins, but the question is for how long will that continue.

Now, I am not trying to make this rant a please pitty me, however, I did want to tell you that if I do not rant as often as I should, that is part of the reason why.

Again, Happy Monday!!
